Court Remands Driver Over Killing Of 2 OAU Applicants, Motorcyclist
One Harrison Chatchi, (32), the driver of the luxurious bus that killed two Post UTME candidates of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife while returning home from the examination center was Thursday remanded in Ile-Ife prison custody.
Chatchi who was docked at an Osun State Magistrates’ Court, Ile-Ife for alleged manslaughter, reckless driving, driving against traffic law and damages however pleaded not guilty to the charges slammed on him.
The Prosecutor, Insp Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sept 2, 2019 around 12:30 pm at RCC Junction, Ilesa/Ile-Ife Express way.
Osanyintuyi said that the defendant, being the driver in-charge of one Luxurious bus with Reg No: AAA 454 XW drove against the traffic law on public Highway.
He added that the defendant drove against one way on public Highway which caused the death of one Sunday Oyemakinwa, (35), a motorcyclist.
According to him, the defendant drove dangerously on public Highway and caused the death of one Johnson Micheal, (18), an aspiring student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
The Prosecutor stated further that the defendant drove recklessly and caused the death of one Chinechorem Omoka, 17, another aspiring student of (OAU) Ile-Ife.
Osanyintuyi expressed to the court that the defendant drove wickedly and damaged one unregistered Boxer motorcycle that belonged to one Sunday Oyemakinwa.
He explained that the offence contravened sections 4, 6 (10), 18 and 78(1) of the Road Traffic Law, Osun, 2002.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Richardson Onyebueke, applied for the bail of the defendant in most liberal term with the plea that his client would not jump bail, but would provide responsible sureties and stands his case.
Magistrate Olukunle Owolawi did not grant the bail of the defendant, but asked his counsel to come with written application for the consideration of his bail.
Owolawi therefore ordered for the remand of the defendant in Ile-Ife prison custody as he adjourned the case until Oct 31, for mention.
Recall that Harrison Chatchi, was the luxurious bus driver that crushed to death, a motorcyclist with his two passengers on OAU, Ile-Ife, Post-UTME exam day.
