Why We Chose Ilesa Custodial As Study Centre- NOUN VC

The Vice-Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria, Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu has declared that the belief of NOUN in the reformation of persons informed the choice of Ilesa Correctional Center as study centre of the University.
The Vice-Chancellor who spoke through Professor Justus Shokefun at the commissioning of National Open University, Ilesa Custodial Study Centre on Monday noted that Ilesa Custodial centre and two others were approved by the institution out of about fifty institutions that applied in the Southwest.
According to him, the essence of sending persons to Correctional Centres is not all about deterrent but for reformation adding that no fewer than 20 inmates are pursuing their Masters and PhD honours at the Enugu Custodial Centre.
Speaking, the Osun State command Controller, Olanrewaju Amoran while appreciating NOUN on behalf of the Acting Controller General of Corrections, John Mrabure for granting the centre approved noted that gone are the days when Correctional Service is meant for punishment and retribution.
According to him, inmates are to be empowered with educational programmes that will benefit them all their lives as contained in Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.
He added that when empowered academically or functionally, inmates will not only be useful to themselves but the society at large and they will feel wanted and want to belong to a world devoid of criminal tendencies.
