Tax Reform: Forget More Taxes, CNG Tells FG
Taraba State chapter of the Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has urged the Federal Government to jettison the proposed tax reform bills, citing their potential negative impact on the state and the northern region at large.
Addressing newsmen in Jalingo, the State Coordinator of CNG, Idris Ayuba, urged the federal government to shift focus from tax reforms to prioritising regional development.
Ayuba added that their stance against the tax bills was not ill-motivated but reflects a collective effort to safeguard the survival and welfare of the Northern region and the country.
He said: “Taraba State is one of the 19 northern states, blessed with abundant natural resources capable of transforming the fortunes of this great country.
“Nevertheless, these great potentials and opportunities could not be properly harnessed due to several challenges, including the closure of borders with Cameroon through Sardauna, Kurmi and Ussa local government areas; dilapidated federal roads; the abandoned Ibi Bridge Project, and other neglected bridges linking Taraba to neighbouring states.”
He also listed among other things the long-delayed Mambilla Hydro Power Plant project, which has stagnated for over 40 years, as well as persistent insecurity as reasons the FG must focus on improving the region’s development indexes.
