Stakeholders Harps On Implementation Of Non-Custodial Measures
Stakeholders including the Correctional Service, Judiciary, Legal-Aid-Council, Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Traditional rulers and a host of others have called for proper implementation of the newly introduced non-custodial measure to achieve the desired objective.
The stakeholders at a 3-day, Consultative Workshop on Effective Implementation of Custodial Measures under Declassification and Decriminalization of Petty Offences in Nigeria Project held that when properly implemented the measure will help decongest Correctional Centers, prevent petty offenders from becoming hardened criminals and help in speedy rehabilitation of offender among others.
The project that held in Osogbo, Osun State was organized by Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) in conjunction with Open Society Initiative of West Africa.
Welcoming participants, the state Controller, Correctional Service, Mr Olanrewaju Amoran appreciated the Controller General of Corrections and PRAWA for organising the workshop and urged stakeholders to make the best use of the opportunity provide by the workshop.
Speaking, the Team Lead, Social Development and Rehabilitation Unit, PRAWA, Mr Ifunanya Gift Igbokwe said the workshop was aimed at sentisization of relevant stakeholders on their roles on the implementation of Non-Custodial measures and feedback that would facilitate the desired objectives.
In his remarks, the officer in charge of Non-Custodial Service, Mr Ayobami Adelakun noted that several efforts to decongest custodial facilities such as jail delivery has not impacted on overcrowding adding that Non-custodial measure such as Parole, Probation, Community Service, Restorative Justice, fine among others will do the magic.
His words “The introduction of the Nigerian Correctional Act 2019 in line with ACJA 2015 has empowered the Nigerian Correctional Service to embark on implementation of Non-custodial measure”.
