Sokoto Grains, Timber Market On Fire
Sokoto Kara Market housing grains, essential commodities and timber products is currently on fire.
The fire, which started 12:30 a.m. on Saturday was still blazing at the time of filing this report.
Though the cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained, the state government has since mobilized emergency services to prevent loss of lives.
The state fire service is still battling to contain the spread of the blaze to residential areas.
Sokoto markets have been experiencing fire outbreaks with high-level of devastation every blessed year since 2007.
The state central Market and the largest market in the northwest region is still under construction as a result of the fire inferno.
Successive administrations right from that of the former Governor of the state Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and the incumbent Governor Ahmed Aliyu have all experienced one or two Market fire outbreaks during the life of their stewardships.
Some of the Markets that suffers fire outbreaks in Sokoto metropolis in the past include Sokoto central Market, Sokoto Old Market, Sokoto Vegetables Market, Gawon Nama Market, Sokoto Kara Market, Motorcycles and Bicycles Market and Kofar Atiku Traditional Market.
All the aforementioned Markets have witnessed one or more fire outbreaks in the past with loss of goods worth several millions of naira.
The state governments in the past and present have been spending huge sums of resources in rebuilding markets as well as assisting victims of the fire incident.
Sokoto Central Market with over 5000 Shops and temporary shades is under construction as a result of fire that razed and over two third of the entire shops in 2021.
