COVID-19: UNILAG, LASU Shutdown Indefinitely
Following the directive of the Federal and Lagos State Governments that all Schools be closed in order to prevent the further spread of the Corona Virus (COVID-19), the management of both University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU)on Friday announced the suspension of all academic activities and closure of the institutions.
The management of the University of Lagos had held a meeting with the Provost and Deans Committee on Thursday, March 19, 2020 to resolve to close the University, which was subsequently followed with an emergency meeting by the Senate on Friday, March 20, 2020 where they approved the resolution in accordance with the order issued by the Federal Government, Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) that all schools nationwide should be closed for the period of one month effective from Monday, March 23, 2020, as a proactive step aimed at preventing the spread of the virus.
In line with the development, the management directed that latest by 4:00 p.m on Saturday, March 21, 2020 all students vacate the hostels and return home, with resumption date subject to review as developments unfold.
The management enjoined all members of the university community to follow precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 while wishing everyone safe and good health during this period.
In the same vein after an emergency meeting held on Friday, 20th March 2020 by the Senate of Lagos State University, the management approved the immediate suspension of all academic activities on campuses of the university, noting that all prior approvals that entail students’ mass movement on/off-campus are also rescinded.
The Senate also directed that the fumigation of the entire University environment particularly, the classrooms be carried out as preventive measure during the period of the shut down; just as the university, particularly the College of Medicine have been encouraged to be part of a problem-solving research team.
In a statement signed by the Coordinator, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations, LASU, Ademola Adekoya, the management directed all students including those at Ojo, Epe and Ikeja to vacate the university campuses immediately from Friday, 20th March 2020, pending further notice of resumption date.
However, members of staff of the University are expected to be at their respective duty posts
