Rotary Spends N122m On Water, Health Infrastructure In Abuja
The District Governor of District 9125, Rotary International, Nnoka Mbanefo, said the club has invested N122 million in building water infrastructure and health facilities in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in the last one year.
The support, including other key initiatives in the area of education, sanitation, among others were important in meeting the club’s basic focus, the governor said at an ongoing district conference in Abuja, which focuses on ‘Leading Africa’s Initiative In Making A Difference’.
He decried the poor state of infrastructure in the education sector, stressing that a lot of student still have lectures under trees in the FCT. Mbanefo also bemoaned the state of health centres across the district, adding that potable water remained a critical challenge even for people in the Federal Capital.
“We have been able to dig a lot of boreholes across the district, we dug over 25 boreholes, which cost about N1 million each. We have touched areas that needed urgent interventions. We have built schools; we have built health centres and maternity; over 14 health centres, which cost about N5 million each. We have hired doctors and nurses.
“We have also in the last one year supplied books to different libraries. We have supplied school uniforms and sanders to less privileged students. We have equipped schools. You can’t imagine that we have places where students still have lectures under the tree. We have also been able to empower teachers, particularly in school where that are no staff rooms,” he said.
He said the club has kept its promises in the past one year and added 750 new members to the district.
