Police Rescue Hostages, Kill Three Kidnappers In Benue
The Nigeria Police Force has announced its re-strategised approach to tackling kidnapping across Nigeria.
NPF says this move is to bolster internal security.
The Force highlighted recent successes, including rescue operations that neutralised kidnappers, recovered arms, and secured the safe release of victims.
In a Thursday statement titled “Kidnapping: Police Re-Strategise to Curb Kidnapping, 3 Kidnappers Neutralised, Victims Rescued in Dangerous Operations,” issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police underscored their commitment to ensuring safety for all Nigerians.
The statement noted that on December 31, 2024, operatives of the Vandiekya Police Divisional Headquarters in Benue State responded to a distress call regarding the abduction of Tor Gajir in Kwande Local Government Area.
He said they apprehended a suspect, Desmond Ahar, whose interrogation led them to the kidnappers’ den in Adikpo.
Upon arrival, the operatives were engaged in a fierce gun battle.
“In the ensuing confrontation, three of the kidnappers were neutralised while others fled with bullet wounds,” the statement read.
The victim was rescued unhurt and provided medical attention, and officers recovered two AK-47 rifles, six loaded magazines, and several rounds of live ammunition.
In another operation on December 28, 2024, police operatives in Nasarawa State discovered an abandoned Sienna vehicle along the Keffi-Kaduna Highway.
Following leads, they located and rescued two hostages, unharmed. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing kidnappers.
On January 7, 2025, Bayelsa State Command operatives intercepted Usman Mohammed en route to Rivers State. A search of his vehicle uncovered an arsenal of weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, a Type 09 AR, magazines, and 120 rounds of ammunition.
The suspect was arrested, and investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the bravery and coordination of the officers involved in these operations.
“The incidents highlight the dedication of our police officers to keeping our communities safe,” the IGP said, urging them to sustain their momentum in ensuring internal security.
He also called on citizens to remain vigilant and collaborate with law enforcement to enhance public safety.
“Together, we can ensure a safer Nigeria,” Egbetokun added.
