The Peoples Democratic Party has congratulated the President-elect of the United States, Republican’s Donald Trump, on his historic victory in Tuesday’s presidential election.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye, on Wednesday in Abuja, the party said Trump’s victory came against many odds and showed the strength of democracy in the US.
The party urged Trump to quickly formulate policies that would ensure a mutually beneficial relationship between the US and Africa, Nigeria in particular.
“At this time, the US and Nigeria must work harder to deepen mutual security and economic interests,” it stated.
The PDP also urged Trump to pursue policies and programmes that protected and promoted constitutional rights and freedom of America’s citizens.
It said: “The campaigns that preceded these elections have been hard fought and sometimes fractious, in a manner that has taken its toll on the American people.
“We urge Trump to move quickly to heal the divides and to reassure all Americans, particularly its minorities, that his administration will pursue policies and programmes that protect and promote their constitutional rights and freedoms.”
The party commended Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party, for her hard fought campaigns for the election.
“During her campaign, Clinton showed herself as a role model for young men, women and children everywhere around the world,” the PDP said.
