2023: NPC Decries Hateful Attacks, Asks Politicians To Sign Peace Accord
National Peace Committee (NPC) has expressed concern over communication among political actors, their publicity agents, spokespersons and media consultants, ahead of 2023 electioneering.
This was contained in a communiqué signed by National Chairman, former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Secretary, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah.
The committee said: “2023 is more than an election. It is an opportunity to serve Nigeria, to defend Nigeria and to uphold her unity and progress.
“Nigerians should avoid the spread of fake news and uphold the principles of tolerance, respect, civility and decency in all public and private conversations and engagements about elections and the progress of Nigeria.
“All political actors, especially their publicity agents and media advisers, should shun personal attacks, avoid insults and incitements; reject the spread of fake news and commit to issue-based campaigns and political rallies in the upcoming 2023 general elections.”
The NPC revealed it has organised the signing of two peace accords for the general elections.
The first, which holds Thursday, September 29, 2022, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, will commit all political parties, presidential candidates and their spokespersons to peaceful campaigns and rallies.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Geregu Power Plc, Mr. Femi Otedola, and three other eminent personalities have been appointed as members of the NPC ahead of the elections.
The others, who are joining the committee, are former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Defence Minister, Yahale Ahmed; former Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Martin Agwai; founder of Channels Television, John Momoh, and a Director at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Miss Idayat Hassan.
The NPC is a non-governmental initiative conceptualised in 2014, in response to emerging threats occasioned by the 2015 general elections.
Since then, the committee has emerged as one of the leading lights and credible organisations in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
