Mentally Deranged Man Stabs Monarch To Death In Ekiti

 Tragedy struck on Monday in Odo-Oro-Ekiti, in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State as the traditional ruler of the community, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin was said to have been stabbed to death by a suspected mentally deranged man.

It was gathered that the monarch was said to have been stabbed to death by the man with a knife, shortly after he held a traditional council meeting with the chiefs of the community.

A resident of the community, Mr Henry Olu, who spoke to journalists on the incident said the man in question, identified simply as Kunle was said to be a member of the same royal family as the slain traditional ruler.

Olu said the mentally deranged person was earlier sighted early in the morning by some chiefs before the meeting was held sitting on the traditional throne (seat) of his victim before he was chased away.

Confirming the incident, the Ekiti State Public Relations Officer, Mr Caleb Ikechukwu said, “It is true the incidence actually happened and that police men had swooped into action.

“The person alleged is an unsound mind and he actually escaped into the bush after committing the crime, our men are combing the bush to fetch the suspect out.

“All I can say for now is that the suspect is within reach and will be put to custody.”

Another source closed to the town had it that, the traditional ruler was attacked while trying to board his official car after the conclusion of the meeting.

Another resident who craved anonymity said,” All we heard was a cry for help from the traditional ruler’s driver shortly after the council’s meeting.

“On getting to the scene of incident, we saw our traditional ruler in a pool of blood, as Kunle had stabbed him with knife in the chest.

“We tried rushing him to the hospital, but Oba Ogunsakin gave up the ghost.”

The development sparked protest in the community as youths who took to the streets brandishing dangerous weapons like sticks, cutlasses and broken bottles searching for the person alleged to have killed the traditional ruler.

Major roads in the community were also barricaded by the rampaging youths while searching for the mam.

The suspected mad man was said to have took to his heels and disappeared into thin air immediately he committed the crime.

His whereabouts was still unknown as of the time of filing this report.

Attempt to speak with chiefs in the community proved abortive, as they were said to be in an emergency meeting on the passage rite of the late Oba.

All market in Ikole-Ekiti was deserted as many traders who came from nearby communities had to run for their dear life.

The late Oba Ogunsakin ascended the throne of “Onise” of Odo-Oro-Ekiti in 1986.
