Lagos Pays N723m Pension Entitlement To Retirees
Lagos State Government has said 149 retirees from its service were
paid N723 Million by the state government as their accrued pension
rights for the month of January 2018.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode who said this at the 47th
Retirement Benefit Bond Certificate Presentation Ceremony held in
Ikeja, Lagos, said the money has been paid to the Retirement Savings
Accounts (RSA) of the respective beneficiaries.
Ambode who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for
Establishments, Training & Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson said the
current administration in Lagos State has special interest in the
wellbeing of the retirees.
He noted that this has been the driving force of the state’s
commitment to regular funding of pension obligations.
According to him, Ambode’s administration has been able to expend N33,
943 billion in form of accrued pension rights to 8,409 retirees in the
last 30 months.
This, he stated, is aside from the regular monthly contributions into
the RSAs of active workers.
“We have been able to clear the backlog of outstanding pension
obligations we met at the inception of this administration and we are
forging ahead to ensure that fresh liabilities arrears from recent
retirements are systematically cleared. We assure all retirees that
your labour in Lagos shall not go unrewarded and you will not retire
into penury,” he said.
The Director-General, Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Mrs.
Folashade Onanuga, said the Contributory Pension Scheme(CPS) is the
best thing democracy has bequeathed to Nigerian workers because it
makes employers fulfill their obligations to workers, ensures
commitment on the part of the different tiers of Government and does
not give room for stressful verification as it is in the Defined
Benefit Scheme (DBS).
