Man To Spend 18 Months In Jail For Beating His Mother

A 37-year-old man, Obinna Nwankwo, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail without an option of fine by a Abakaliki Magistrate Court, Ebonyi State for beating his mother, Mrs. Chinyere Nwankwo.
The accused was arraigned on two-count charge bothering on assault for hitting his mother with an iron rod on the head and for wilfully and unlawfully damaging four plastic chairs, Alumaco windows and other valuables, valued at N160,000, belonging to his mother.
The accused person is a native of Onu-Ebonyi in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state, had upon arraignment on January 14, 2020, admitted committing the offence and was remanded in a correctional facility.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Mbam, who had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offence at Quarry Junction, Abakaliki, about 6 p.m. on January 11, 2020, when he hit his mother with iron rod on the head.
He said Obinna had pleaded guilty to the charge and urged the court to convict and sentence him in accordance with the provisions of the law.
Mbam added that the offence contravened and was punishable under Sections 351 and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.
According to the Chief Magistrate, Happiness Chima, who gave the verdict after the accused pleaded guilty to the offence while said the court exercised its discretion on the matter and decided to be a bit harsh on the accused, for assaulting and insulting his mother, who carried him in the womb for nine months and breastfed, for over six months.
She said: “This is not just an affront to your mother alone, but all women worldwide.”
