FUTA Student Slumps, Dies Playing Football
A 500 level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Tunji Agboola at the weekend slumped and died while playing football in the premises of his lodge.
It was learnt that the student of Applied Geophysics was playing football with his friends at his residence, off campus very close to FUTA South Gate when the incident occurred.
Eye witness who does not want his name on print said he was there when the deceased slumped and was rushed to a nearby private hospital because the institution’s health centre had been shut for months due to the strike by the Non-Academic Staff Unions.
According to him, the doctors could not resuscitate Agboola after he went into coma due to lack of basic oxygen apparatus and other basic facilities.
It was further gathered that the deceased was rushed by his friends and rescue team to the State Specialist Hospital, Akure where he was confirmed ‘Brought in Dead’ (BID).
The incident almost sparked off a protest by his colleagues especially, the Nigerian Association of Earth and Mineral Science Students (NAEMSS), who felt he would not have died if he had received prompt medical attention and treatment.
The NAEMSS President, Victor Awosiji and other union leaders had to intervene by visiting the Akure Area Command for immediate response to douse the risen tension.
The students appealed to the state government to shut down the hospital for not having basic medical facilities to save life in times of emergency.
The Student Union Government (SUG) President, Adeyinka Olasehinde who confirmed the incident described it as very disheartening, noting that the union would be meeting the management to express their dissatisfaction.
