FRSC Deploys 677 Personnel In Imo To Promote Safe Driving

The Imo Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has deployed 377 regular marshals and 300 special marshals in strategic areas of the state.

The Acting Corps Marshal of the corps, Mr Dauda Biu, said this at the inauguration of the 2022 “ember months” campaign in Owerri on Tuesday.

The campaign is entitled, “Avoid speed, overloading and unsafe tyres to arrive alive’’.

Biu, represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer, RS9HQ, Mr Ocheja Ameh, said that the campaign was meant to educate road users against poor attitudes to road traffic rules.

Ameh said that Nigerians must do away with the impression that most road crashes on the highways were caused by “blood-sucking demons”.

Biu said that, on the contrary, the major causes of road crashes on the highways include speed, non-adherence to traffic rules and driving under the influence of alcohol, among other bad road habits.

He said that the organisation had identified all the flash points in the state and deployed enough manpower to ensure the free flow of traffic and an accident-free Yuletide.

In a speech, Gov. Hope Uzodimma said that the State Government would partner with FRSC during and after the Yuletide celebration to ensure the safety of its citizens.

Uzodimma, represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr Okey Anukwem, said that his administration had spent billions of naira to rehabilitate three federal roads in the state.

He said: “The theme for this year’s campaign is a call for all commuters and other road users to embrace the culture of safe road use as they travel daily.

“FRSC must ensure that all road users in Imo are licensed.

“I commend FRSC for bringing the issue of road safety to the front burner of public discourse,’’ the governor said.
He advised road users to seize the opportunity to improve in their culture toward road traffic rules.

The Sector Commander, Mr Evaristus Ebeniro, assured that the command had put in place operational strategies to ensure that roads were safe for commuters.

He said the regular marshals and special marshals deployed in the state would perform various functions, ranging from traffic enforcement to control, emergency rescue and clearing of obstructions, amongst others.

Ebeniro said that 24 routes and 34 traffic control points had been identified for effective patrol coverage and traffic control activities.

He also said that FRSC had strengthened collaboration with other emergency management agencies, which would help to guarantee safety in the state.

He thanked the governor for his goodwill and partnership with the commission.

The state FRSC boss, however, appealed to him for more assistance to enable the command to secure heavy-duty equipment for effective operation.
