NEMA, Others Brace Up For Impending Flood In FCT
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Abuja Operation Office, among other disaster management agencies have begun to prepare for emergency response in to possible flooding of Abuja and its environs due to the anticipated heavy rain.
This is just as FCT residents have been urged to ensure timely report of any disaster in their environs by dialing the emergency number ‘122’.
The Head of Abuja Operations Office, Mr. Justin Uwazuruonye, during a simulation exercise, Saturday, in Abuja, on the use of extricating tools on-board the new Rapid Response Vehicle (RPV) donated to NEMA by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), expressed the agency’s readiness to tackle any impending flood in the FCT and its environs.
Admitting that emergency response services are in huge deficit in the country, he said victims of trauma, such as road traffic crashes and collapsed structures die as a result of unprofessional handling by first responders.
Uwazuruonye said it was in view of this that NEMA, as the coordinating agency of disaster management in the country, decided to train other agencies including the Federal Road Safety Corps, Fire Service, Nigeria Police, and operation staff of the agency on the use of the extricating tool on board the RPV for critical search and rescue within area of responsibilities.
He, however, urged FCT residents to be at alert of the impending flood and ensure they pay heed to early warning, saying if there was need to move from flood plain area, they should do so.
