Osun Vows To Prosecute Promoters Of Female Circumcision
Law enforcers in Osun State have vowed to prosecute perpetrators of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in a bid to end the practice.
At a consensus building on FGM abandonment in Ilesa East, Osun State, policemen, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personal and members of local vigilantes vowed to work with communities on the eradication of FGM.
The consensus building was organized by Action Health Incorporated, a non-governmental organisation championing the advocacy to end FGM.
It has the support of UNFPA and in collaboration with Osun State Ministry of health and that of women affairs.
Toyin Adelowokan, the state reproductive health coordinator at the Osun state ministry of health, said FGM practice does not have any health benefits.
She pointed out that the practice exposes females to dangers and it contravenes laws of the state.
Also, she warned that whoever is caught engaging in female circumcision would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
Meanwhile, the AHI Programme Officer, Fatimah Idris, charged security operatives to ensure the protection of the identities of reporters of FGM cases.
