Veteran Ebi, 22 Others Make Super Falcons’ World Cup List
Head Coach of the Super Falcons, Randy Waldrum, Friday, announced the 23 players who will each earn a minimum of $30,000 (N15million) for participating in the FIFA Women’s World Cup holding in Australia and New Zealand.
FIFA in a landmark decision announced that each player would be guaranteed at least $30,000 after a ground-breaking move by FIFA to disburse some of the prize money to individuals rather than national federations.
That amount is for players whose teams are eliminated from the first round. They get more as their teams progress. No Super Falcons player has ever earned $30,000 in a tournament before. If they succeed in winning the cup, all 23 members of the will take home $270,000, part of a $110 million total prize pool that is roughly 300 percent higher than what FIFA offered for the 2019 tournament
The awaiting Naira millionaires include European Cup winner Asisat Oshoala, dainty attacking midfielder Rasheedat Ajibade and history-making captain Onome Ebi.
There is also first choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, as well as defenders Osinachi Ohale and Oluwatosin Demehin, midfielders Halimatu Ayinde and Christy Ucheibe, and forwards Esther Okoronkwo and Desire Oparanozie.
Nigeria will play Canada, co-host nation Australia and the Republic of Ireland in that order at the biggest-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in history, with 32 teams set to debut at the championship – same number as for the men’s finals in Qatar last year.
Nine-time African champions Nigeria, who were within whistling distance of the semi-finals before losing to Brazil in extra time at USA ‘99, will arrive in Australia on Tuesday, July 4, for a 15-day final camping programme before the finals begin on 20th July.
