England’s Lauren James Apologises To Nigeria’s Alozie Over Red Card Incident
England attacker Lauren James has apologised to Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie following the incident involving the two players which led to a red card for the former.
James was issued a straight red card on Monday during the Three Lionesses’ penalty shootout win over the Super Falcons in their Round of 16 match at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Both teams played out a goalless draw during regulation time and with the game proceeding into extra time, James was sent off following a VAR review for a needless stamp on Alozie.
The Chelsea winger on Tuesday in a tweet apologised to Nigeria’s Alozie for the red card which will rule her out of England’s World Cup quarter-final encounter against Colombia.
“All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened,” James tweeted in a reply to a tweet from Alozie.
“Also, for our England fans and my team-mates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour and I promise to learn from my experience.”
Alozie meanwhile had earlier tweeted, urging fans critisizing James to ‘relax’ as it was just a football match and emotions probably got the better part of the Englishwoman.
“Abeg, rest. We are playing on the world’s stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James,” the Super Falcon tweeted.
The Super Falcons crashed out of the tournament after losing to the Three Lionesses of England at the Brisbane Stadium in Queensland, Australia on Monday.
Despite England being one player down, the European nation held on for the whole duration of extra time after which they defeated Nigeria 4-2 during a penalty shootout.
