Ekiti Court Jails Man For 14 Years For Raping 12-Year-Old Girl
An Ado Ekiti High Court on Thursday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Olowo Ismaila, to 14-year imprisonment for raping a 12-year-old girl.
Justice Dele Omotoso, who presided over the hearing on Thursday, held that the prosecution has proved the case against him beyond reasonable doubt and that evidence before the court, including the medical report, proved that Ismaila committed the crime.
In his judgment, Justice Omotoso ordered that Ismaila’s sentence would start counting from 14thApril, 2016, when he was first remanded in prison custody for the offence.
Ismaila committed the crime on 1st February, 2016 in Iluomoba-Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
The prosecution counsel, Mr. Akinola Abon, in proving the case, called witnesses and tendered exhibits while the convict gave evidence in his own defence during trial.
Abon, in his reaction, said that the verdict would serve as a deterrent to those engaged in sexual offences including the rape of minors.
Defence counsel, Mr. Babatunde Falade, said he would consult with his client to take a stand on the appeal of the judgment.
