Don Advocates Restructuring, Re-engineering Of Nigeria’s Varsity System
Prof . Abayomi Sofoluwe of Department of Educational Management, University of Ilorin, has advocated for the restructuring and re-engineering of the university system in Nigeria.
Sofoluwe made the call in Ilorin in his paper presentation at the 248th Inaugural Lecture of the university, entitled: “Paradigm Shift and Dysfunctionalism in University Educational Management”.
He underscored the need to look at the duplicated department and courses, so as to streamline and rationalise them.
The don, who teaches in the Faculty of Educational Management of the university, observed that population of students must be reprogrammed to match the existing designed capacities of the basic facilities required to promote excellent learning.
“Once the population of the students match the designed capacities, contact among students and staff will improve students teaching/learning process,” he said.
Sofoluwe advised that academic staff should also seek counselling assistance on the issue that retard their effectiveness.
He submitted that government must increase budgetary allocation to education sector and honour agreements that have been signed with unions.
The expert on education however observed that the prevailing feeling by the academics that participation in commercial activities as fraudulent, unrealistic and incompatible with the university’s ideals need to be discarded.
“Universities will also need to pay more attention to other potential conflicting areas such as ensuring good conditions of service for all staff.
“They should provide extra-curricular services for students, facilitating responsible student unionism and protecting academic freedom,” he said.
