Court Remands Hotelier In Prison Over Unlawful Possession Of Guns
Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, remanded an hotelier, Oliver Nwodo, in prison custody for allegedly being in possession of two pump action guns and 400 cartridges without lawful authority.
Justice Hassan gave the order after Nwodo was arraigned before him by men of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Lagos, on a two-count charge of unlawful possession of firearms.
The police, in charge FHC/L/339c/2017, alleged that the accused person, on August 22, 2017, at Alaba International Market, Alaba, Lagos, was arrested with two pump action guns marked 9266 and 7061, and 400 cartridges which he was unable to give satisfactory account of how he acquired.
The offences? according to the police prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, is contrary to, and punishable under section 3(1) of the firearms Act. Cap. R11, and section 428 of the Criminal Code Cap. C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The accused person, however pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Following his plea, Animashaun applied to court for a trial date, while also urging the court to remand the accused person in prison custody, till the determination of the case.
But his lawyer, Mohammed Ogundele, informed the court that he had filed a summons for bail on behalf of his client.
He therefore urged the court to fix a date for the hearing of the application.
Justice Hassan therefore adjourned the matter till December 5, for argument of the bail application.
