Boat Mishap: Alia To Provide Life Jackets At Crossing Points

 

The Benue State government is to provide life jackets at all crossing points in the state as an immediate step to check the loss of lives during boat mishaps in the state.

Recall that a recent boat mishap in Agatu Local Government Area, LGA, of the state claimed the lives of over 20 traders from Nasarawa state who were on their way home after the day’s business at Ocholonya market.

IThe Governor who expressed sadness over the incident also condoled families who lost loved ones in the tragic accident.

He stated that, “It is sad that this incident has brought immense sorrow to our communities, and I share in your grief during this difficult time.”

He also sympathized with those who sustained varying degrees of injury during the mishap, stating that his administration was committed to ensuring they received all necessary medical treatment and support.

“Your wellbeing is our priority, and we will work diligently to provide the care you need for a swift recovery.”

The Governor who expressed his gratitude to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum for the show of solidarity and support as soon as they received the news of the tragedy said, “your compassion and partnership are invaluable to us, and together we can navigate these challenging times.”

He assured that in light of the unfortunate incident, he would liaise with the Nigeria Navy to implement measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future because “we must prioritize the safety of our waterways to protect our citizens.”

The Governor also declared that “we will provide life jackets at all crossing points in the state as an immediate step, this initiative is crucial to reducing casualties to zero in the event of mishaps.”

While urging union leaders in the maritime business in the state and community officials to commence sensitization efforts among their members on the critical need for the use of life jackets, the Governor also stated that, “It is imperative that we all understand the importance of safety measures while traversing our rivers. Together, we can foster a culture of safety and awareness that will help protect our people.”

While praying for the repose of those who lost their lives, the Governor called on the state to honor the memory of the deceased by committing to safety and vigilance on waterways.
