Asake, Burna Boy, Rema Lead Spotify’s Gen Z Top 10
Spotify’s year-end wrap-up, known as Wrapped, has provided insights into the listening habits of different demographics, and one thing’s clear: Gen Z can’t get enough of Afrobeats. Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Asake, Davido, Rema, and Omah Lay all claimed spots in the top 10 most-streamed artists among Gen Z listeners in Sub-Saharan Africa, showcasing the genre’s undeniable popularity among younger audiences.
Leading the charge are Canadian rapper Drake and Afrobeats king Burna Boy, with Drake securing the top spot thanks to his collaborative album with 21 Savage on “Her Loss” and the release of his highly anticipated album “For All the Dogs” in October. Burna Boy, consistently lauded for his energetic live shows and innovative sound, remains a favorite among Gen Z.
However, two rising stars from Nigeria have made significant waves: Asake and Rema. Asake, known for his infectious blend of Afrobeats and Amapiano, snagged the No. 3 spot, further solidifying his status as a Gen Z darling. His song “Lonely At The Top” topped the charts within the Gen Z demographic, highlighting its resonating message and catchy melodies.
Not to be outdone, Rema, whose smooth vocals and genre-bending tracks have earned him international acclaim, landed at No. 4. His deluxe version of the album “Rave & Roses” and the Selena Gomez-assisted remix of “Calm Down” cemented his place as a leading voice in Afrobeats’ new generation.
The rest of the top 10 features a diverse mix of local and international artists, including Omah Lay (No. 5), Ayra Starr (No. 6), Wizkid (No. 7), Ruger (No. 8), Fireboy DML (No. 9), and Central Cee (No. 10). Interestingly, nine out of the ten most-streamed songs are African, rooted in Afrobeats or Amapiano, with only British artists Dave and Central Cee’s “Sprinter” representing hip-hop in the top 10.
This data reveals the undeniable influence of Afrobeats on Gen Z’s musical landscape. The genre’s infectious rhythms, positive vibes, and socially conscious lyrics resonate deeply with this generation, shaping their musical preferences and creating a vibrant cultural phenomenon.
