Sanwo-Olu Sacks LAWMA MD, Names Replacement
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, to resign from his position following mounting public outcry over persistent refuse heaps and waste management failures across the state.
In a swift move to restore efficiency to the state’s sanitation framework, the Governor immediately approved the appointment of Dr. Hassan Sanuth as the new Managing Director of the agency.
Gbadegesin’s departure follows months of growing complaints by residents over uncollected refuse along major highways, commercial hubs, and residential neighborhoods.
In a bid to stem the tide, LAWMA has intensified emergency cleanup operations and overhauled collection schedules across critical corridors in the metropolis.
According to updates from the agency, daily refuse collection has been fully restored along key arterial routes, including Ijesha Road and Itire-Ikate. In the Bucknor-Ijegun axis, accumulated waste dumps have been cleared, with the area now placed on a mandatory three-times-weekly collection schedule.
Additionally, LAWMA has taken over direct interim waste management services in Okeira and Oluodo following the termination of operational contracts with Private Sector Participants (PSP) in those zones due to non-performance.
Clearance operations and routine evacuations are also ongoing at Ogolonto, Igbokusu, and Iraye. Meanwhile, Obalende has been completely cleared of illegal blackspots, fitted with modern heavy-duty waste bins, and placed under strict environmental surveillance to prevent re-littering.
The newly appointed LAWMA boss, Dr. Sanuth, is expected to assume office immediately to oversee the ongoing state-wide sanitation drive and stabilize waste collection operations across all local government areas.
