U.S. Based Nigerian Athlete, Olatoye, Stripped Of African Games Medals
The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) has stripped United States-based Nigeria female shot put thrower, Oyesade Olatoye of the two medals she won at the 2019 African Games in Morocco.
Olatoye won a gold and bronze medals for Team Nigeria at the last African Games in Rabat, Morocco.
The Ohio State athlete won gold in the women’s shot put and a bronze medal in the women hammer throw. The performance in Morocco qualified Olatoye for the recently concluded IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha.
The athlete will lose both medals due to ineligibility.
“In reference to the transfer of allegiance for Oyesade Olatoye, the final decision of the NRP has determined that the athlete was not eligible to represent Nigeria at the time of the 2019 African Games and that her results there have to be annulled,” the statement read.
She had competed for the United States as a junior athlete and had to engage a lawyer to facilitate her clearance alongside her father.
Although, Olatoye was not cleared for the African Games at the time of the championship, she was however cleared for the Doha 2019 World Championships. She is now free to compete for Nigeria.
Some athletics followers blamed the Technical Department of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) yesterday for the calamity that befell Olatoye.
“The AFN Technical Department failed to do its work properly. A decision was reached on July 31, 2019, almost a month before the African Games, yet the AFN couldn’t act. This is bad for our athletics. I don’t know how the lady will be feeling now,” one analyst stated Thursday.
