139 Cultists renounced, Surrender Arms In Badagry
Over 139 Cult members belonging to three different confraternities, on Thursday in Badagry West Local government in Lagos state, surrendered their arms and denounced cultism.
The young men and women, who were putting on T-shirt with inscription : ‘Say no to cultism’, belonging to Aiye, pirate and Eiye confraternities presented their arms to the Commissioner of police in Lagos State, Mr. Imohimi Edgal and the Chairman of Badagry West Local government, Mr Onilude Olusegun.
Receiving the repentant cultists, Edgal said the renunciation was made possible following community policing relationship and community safety adopted by the Badagry Divisional Police Officer, Samson Akhiromen, a Superintendent of Police.
Edgal said since he assumed duty as commissioner of police in Lagos, over 860 young men and women had renounced cultism and surrendered many arms and ammunition in Ikorodu areas.
He described cultism as the biggest crime in the state, stressing that there were appreciable success recorded in checking the menace.
“The next to cultism is drug related crimes. It is worrisome to see that some people are introducing primary and secondary school students into hard drugs and cultism.
“I called on all schools management to be at alert on visitors coming into the school. Every visitor must be profile and documented. I also called on other community leaders, local government authorities, traditional rulers to emulate Badagry West.
“Any where I am called to come and receive repentant cultists, I will be there without wasting time. I commend the local government authority, traditional rulers, police officers that had made the programme a reality, “he said.
The police boss also called on sister security agencies in Badagry to ensure total policing of all border areas, with a view to checking inflow of illegal arms in the state.
