Youths, Students Stage Solidarity Rally In Ekiti Over Anti Cultism Law
Youths and students of tertiary institutions in Ekiti State on Tuesday staged a solidarity rally in support of state anti-cultism bill recently passed and signed into law by Governor Ayodele Fayose.
Staging the rally to identify with the governor in Ado Ekiti, the state capital on Tuesday, the youths who publicly declare their support for the Law, praised Fayose for displaying an uncommon courage to sign into Law bill handing out death penalty to students found guilty of being involved in cultism on campus.
The governor had sponsored a bill to the State House of Assembly prescribing death penalty for student cultists, following the recent killings of two students of the Ekiti State University, (EKSU) by suspected cultists.
The students from the Ekiti State University, College of Education, Ikere, College of Health Science and Technology, Ijero-Ekiti and Federal Polythenic, Ado-Ekiti and among other tertiary institutions in the state were armed with placards with several various inscriptions that expressed their support for governor’s Fayose’s signing into Law, the anti-cultism bill and the anti-grazing Law.
Some of the placards read, “We Comment Governor Fayose ‘s anti-cultism Law”, Governor Fayose, Thanks for Saving our lives’, “Cultism is evil, let us stop it in Ekiti, and ‘Governor Fayose, we love you, among others.”
Addressing the Deputy Governor of the state, Professor Kolapo Olusola who received the students on behalf of the governor, the National President, Federation of Ekiti State Students, Comrade Adewunmi Idowu said, “We are here today to commend the unwavering effort of the governor of Ekiti in combating acts of terrorism by signing into Law the anti-grazing bill to save the farmers from menacing herdsmen and also for combating acts of cultism and wanton killings by signing into law bill giving out death penalty to student cultists.”
Responding, Olusola who commended the students for their support for the various laws passed by the government to safeguard the lives and property in the state, urged them to spread the awareness of the death
penalty law against cultism to all their campuses and report any cultist on campuses to the school authorities who would wade in and apprehend the culprit for prosecution.
