YABATECH Staff School Board Prioritises Teachers’ Welfare, Career Advancement And Quality Education

The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Staff School Board of Governors has reaffirmed its commitment to teacher’s welfare and career advancement, promising to support the progression of teachers on Level 13 to Level 14 while recognising long-serving staff for their contributions to education.

The commitment was announced during activities marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, where teachers and non-teaching staff of the YABATECH Staff School and YCT Secondary School were honoured for their dedication to shaping the lives of Nigerian youths.

Speaking on behalf of the Rector, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul, the Chairman, Board of Governors of the two schools, Dr. Abiodun Ashiru, described Teachers’ Day as an opportunity to celebrate the men and women whose patience, commitment and sacrifice continue to influence the lives and future of children.

Ashiru said teaching was more than a profession, describing it as a noble responsibility requiring dedication, compassion, discipline and a genuine desire to make a difference.

He noted that every successful professional, leader, scientist, entrepreneur and responsible citizen had benefited from the guidance of teachers, stressing that the impact of a good teacher could extend far beyond the classroom and last a lifetime.

The chairman commended the teachers for their resilience amid societal challenges, noting that they continued to impart knowledge, nurture talents, instil discipline and build the confidence pupils and students needed to succeed.

He urged them to embrace innovation, digital technology, continuous professional development and contemporary teaching methods. According to him, education must equip children not only with academic knowledge but also with creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, good character and adaptability.

Ashiru said the Board recognised that the quality of education in the schools was closely linked to teachers’ welfare, motivation and professional development. He assured the teachers that the Board would continue to work with school management and other stakeholders to create an environment where excellence could thrive and outstanding contributions would be recognised and rewarded.

He also disclosed that staff welfare remained a strategic priority, assuring long-serving teachers of appropriate recognition for their service. He added that the Board was prepared to support the progression of teachers on Level 13 to Level 14 as part of its commitment to career advancement and staff development.

Ashiru further called for stronger collaboration among parents, teachers and school management, saying such partnership would ultimately benefit pupils and students.

At the YCT Secondary School, the Principal, Mr. Williams Oluyemi, described the celebration as an opportunity for teachers to reflect on and appreciate their contributions to students’ development. He urged them to remain committed despite the challenges confronting the profession, expressing confidence that their efforts would be rewarded.

The Chairman of the school’s Parent-Teachers Forum, Dr. Pius Egiolamhen, represented by Mrs. Bolanle Adeniran, commended the teachers for their dedication. He said the achievements of former students in higher institutions within Nigeria and abroad demonstrated the quality of work being done by the teaching staff.

In a major show of support, the PTF donated 20 computer systems, 15 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units and N500,000 cash to the teachers.

The school also presented long-service awards and cash prizes to teaching and non-teaching staff who had served between 22 and 25 years.

At the YABATECH Staff School, the Head Teacher, Mr. Rasheed Adeniyi, said the celebration underscored the importance of recognising the teaching profession. He appreciated the Board of Governors for making the occasion memorable.

Adeniyi also announced a major academic achievement, disclosing that all 72 pupils presented by the school for the Lagos State external examination passed, representing a 100 per cent success rate.

He attributed the feat to the strategic direction of the school leadership and the commitment of the teachers, urging them to sustain the standard and continue giving their best to the pupils.

The Chairman of the Staff School’s Parent-Teacher Association, Mr. Oluwole Olaleye, represented by Mr. Samuel Onyaiteru, commended the teachers for their patience, sacrifice and commitment to nurturing the children.

He stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among parents, teachers and school management in laying a strong foundation for the academic, moral and personal development of pupils.

Long-service awards and cash prizes were also presented to teaching and non-teaching staff of the Staff School who had served between 25 and 32 years.

Responding on behalf of the teachers, the Social Welfare Officer of the Staff School, Mrs. Olayemi Odebode, expressed appreciation to the Rector and Management for what she described as significant improvements in staff welfare.

She specifically commended Management for the payment of 13th-month salary, Ramadan and Easter bonuses, prompt salaries, employment of additional teachers, regular promotions, salary increments, promotion to Level 13, a conducive working environment, renovation of the hall and toilet facilities through the Lions Club, and payment of leave bonuses.

Odebode also appreciated Management for providing special attire for teachers to mark the celebration, while appealing for further improvements in school infrastructure and facilities.

Her requests included the renovation of the playing ground and floors, provision of additional furniture, replacement or installation of sliding windows, renovation of the library and provision of more computers.

The 2026 Teachers’ Day celebration brought together Management, the Board of Governors, parents and the two school communities in a collective demonstration of appreciation for teachers and a renewed commitment to staff welfare, career development, quality education and improved learning facilities.
