YABATECH Charges Registry Staff On Professionalism, Efficiency And Digital Competence

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has charged Registry staff to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality, efficiency and technological competence in the discharge of their duties, stressing that their roles extend beyond routine administrative functions to the strategic management of the institution.

The charge was given at a capacity-building seminar organised by the College’s Registry Unit in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), Onike Chapter, on the theme, “The 21st Century Registry Staff as a Strategic Manager: Efficiency, Technology and Professionalism in the Tertiary Education System” held at the Collage Hall.

Delivering the seminar, Dr. Beatrice Oreoluwa, Chairperson of the NIM Onike Chapter, challenged Registry personnel to embrace a new administrative mindset anchored on strategic thinking, professional ethics, effective communication and the deployment of technology to improve service delivery.

She stressed that the Registry should not be regarded merely as a clerical department but as a strategic management hub responsible for information management, human capital administration, records preservation and institutional coordination.

According to her, the effectiveness of a tertiary institution depends significantly on the efficiency of its administrative systems, making it imperative for Registry staff to demonstrate competence, accountability and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Drawing on the principles of scientific management associated with Frederick Taylor, Oreoluwa urged staff to identify and eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic procedures that delay service delivery. She challenged them to examine routine processes, including transcript processing and the handling of official files, with a view to reducing turnaround time while maintaining accuracy and accountability.

She also called for stronger collaboration among Registry units and other departments, noting that administrative efficiency could be undermined when officers worked in isolation rather than as interconnected parts of an institutional system.

Oreoluwa further reminded participants that Registry personnel handle sensitive information relating to staff recruitment, promotions, disciplinary matters and students’ academic records. She therefore emphasised confidentiality, integrity and responsible information management, drawing attention to the legal and professional implications of unauthorised disclosure of personal data under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Earlier, the Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council of YABATECH, Mrs. Henrietta Adebola Badejo, described the seminar as a timely intervention to strengthen the knowledge, skills and professional capacity of Registry personnel in response to the evolving demands of tertiary education.

She noted that the Registry plays a critical role in institutional governance, policy implementation, documentation, coordination and regulatory compliance, adding that the quality of its operations influences the College’s overall performance and reputation.

Badejo urged staff to move beyond routine administrative practices and embrace innovation, technology and strategic thinking in advancing the College’s objectives.

She also encouraged participants to actively engage in the training and translate the knowledge acquired into measurable improvements in their respective areas of responsibility.

In a related address, the representative of the rector, the Deputy Rector, Administration, Arc. Femi Lawal, emphasised the importance of continuous training and retraining, urging participants to apply the lessons from the seminar to their daily assignments and share relevant knowledge to strengthen institutional performance.

The seminar reinforced the expectation that Registry professionals must demonstrate not only technical competence but also discipline, discretion, ethical conduct, teamwork and a service-oriented attitude; stated.

For YABATECH, according to him, the training provides an opportunity to reinforce professional standards within the Registry and promote an administrative culture in which efficiency, accountability and continuous learning remain central to effective institutional governance.

He encouraged the participants to make professionalism a daily practice, ensuring that every administrative process reflects the College’s commitment to excellence, responsive service delivery and the effective management of its human and institutional resources.
