Woman In Police Net For Buying 1-month Old Baby For N130,000
Operatives of Lagos State Command on Monday paraded a 40 year- old woman for allegedly buying a one-month-old baby girl from her biological mother at N130,000.
The woman, identified as Mrs. Cecilia Okafor said the biological mother of the baby was wondering about that when she saw her and decided to take her to her house and nurtured her pregnancy till she gave birth.
It was learnt that after the mother of the baby gave birth, she decided to sell the baby for the woman who took care of her for N130,000.
Mrs. Okafor said when the girl told her she wanted to sell the baby but inquired from her why she wanted to do that.
“She said the biological mother of the baby claimed since there was nobody to care of her and she needed money to take care of her asthma because I was barren for fifteen years that was why I bought the baby from her.
“After we had sealed the deal, she travelled to Abia State where she gave birth to a baby girl and she then phone me about her delivery. It was then I sent my sister and my brother to go to Abia State to bring the baby girl back to Lagos after which I gave them the money to pay to her.”
She added, ” It was when the people I sent to Imo State to bring the baby was returning to Lagos that policemen arrested them at Anthony Village area, which also led to my arrest and my husband.
“I regret my action, it was because I needed the baby that was why I decided to buy it. My mates had given birth to three children to four children and I am no more getting younger, God should forgive me.”
According to the 20-year-old biological mother of the baby, Miss. Miracle Kalu,’ it was frustration that made her to sell the baby.
She said, ‘’It was when I was wondering around that the woman saw me in Lagos and take good care of me during my antenatal till I gave birth in Imo State.
“Unfortunately, when I noticed I was pregnant I went back to my boyfriend that am pregnant he chased me away that he doesn’t want baby, that was why I left Imo to Lagos. When it was time for me to give birth I went back to Imo State where I delivered the baby girl.
“When I have no money to take care of the baby, I told my sister that I wanted to sell my baby and she gave me the go-ahead to do it that was why I decided to call the woman to tell her to come and take the baby.”
She further said, ‘’had it been my parents were to be alive I wouldn’t sell my baby they would take care of her, but sister have her own challenges too. I stopped at Senior Secondary School 2. I and my boyfriend used to meet in his shop that was where he slept with me and I got pregnant.”
The lady and the man who went to Imo State to bring the baby to Lagos said they were only sent by their sister to bring the child.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odomosu who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters, Ikeja, said the woman and man who claimed to be coupled were found with the day-old baby girl.
The CP said on April 26, policemen from Anthony Village were on enforcement duty patrol when they pin down a Toyota Sienna van carrying seven passengers, with a couple who carried a baby.
“When the policemen saw the baby, they detected it to be a stolen one, the passengers claimed they were coming from Orlu in Imo State, during questions the suspects who claimed to be couple said they were sent to bring the baby from the mother whom the person that sent them had paid.
“The couples who paid for the baby were later arrested by the police and the biological mother of the baby was also arrested in Imo State. We are going to hand over the baby to the biological mother and those who claimed to be couples and the buyers would be charged to court.”
