Woman In Police Custody For Abandoning Baby In Pit Toilet
A 20 years old woman, Shamsiyya Hassan who delivered a new born baby (Male child) and abandoned the baby in a pit toilet is currently cooling her feet in custody of the Katsina state police command.
This was even as she claimed she didn’t even know it was a child or not, all she knew was something came out from her private part and fell into the pit toilet.
Shamsiyya was since arrested alongside her boyfriend, Jamilu for adultery and impregnating her.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Gambo Isah while confirming the incident said it happened in Nasarawa area of Funtua local government area of the state when Shamsiyya who was pregnant for Jamilu (her boyfriend) got married to Hassan and a day after she delivered a baby herself in the pit toilet and abandoned the new born baby there.
DSP Isah said the cry of the baby attracted a neighbour who then drew attention of others and later the police to the development.
He said the police rescued the baby from the pit toilet alive, where the baby was taken to the hospital, Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital, ABUTH, Shika, Zaria and later died after five days. According to him, “She got married a day, and the second day, she gave birth. She delivered by herself in the pit toilet.
Coming out of the toilet, one of her neighbour had the cry of the baby in the toilet. So drew the attention of people. From there, she confessed that, yes, she is the one. That she didn’t know if it was a child or not, all she knew was something came out from her private part and fell into the toilet.
“During the cause of investigation, the man she got married to didn’t even know that she was pregnant. Then we arrested somebody, Jamilu, she said impregnated her and her boyfriend,” DSP Isah said. Additional information gathered was that Shamsiyya had given birth to four children to her first husband who divorced her, along the line had a boyfriend who impregnated her and could not take responsibility of the pregnancy hence the decision to take the pregnancy to get married to Hassan who didn’t suspected she was pregnant before he married her.
Interacting with Shamsiyya and when asked how she felt giving birth to the baby and abandoning him in the pit toilet, she said it was not her wish but it was a trial by God which she believed is destined.
