Union Seeks AMCON Intervention In Payment Of Terminal Benefits
The Iron and Steel Senior Staff of Nigeria (ISSSAN) has urged
President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on Assets Management Company of
Nigeria (AMCON) for payment of full entitlements of workers at Delta
Steel Company.
The Acting General Secretary of the union, Mr. Adewale Okeshola who
made the appeal in an interview with journalists in Lagos on Sunday
said since AMCON took over the company from Global Steel
Infrastructure in 2012, the workers were neither paid their arrears of
salaries nor their terminal entitlements in full.
According to him, many of the concerned workers have died of
frustration while those alive are facing serious economic hardship.
“The workers in Delta Steel Company (DSC) has suffered untold hardship
and all forms of dehumanisation as a result of the closure of the
company over five years ago and the subsequent taken over by AMCON.
“We would want to use this medium to call in President Muhammadu
Buhari and well-meaning Nigeria to prevail on AMCON to pay in full the
workers’ entitlements.
“The failure to do this will amount to injustice. Government must make
sure every worker gets his or her full entitlements,” the scribe said.
According to him, about 200 affected workers are seriously in pains
since AMCON took over the company and appointed a Receiver Manager to
carry out all functions and to manage the company.
Adeshola noted that AMCON had made series of attempts to get a genuine
investor to take over the company until the present investors showed
interest.
He, however, added: “Before the company can be in operation, all
industrial issues need to be settled because there are lots of backlog
of salaries and allowance s of workers to be settled.
“Within this period of closure, workers are exposed to untold
hardship; many are dead, as a result of hunger, sickness and many
homes broken due to lack of means to livelihood.”
