UN Raises Concern On Decline In Education
Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General, United Nations has warned that “we are facing a crisis of learning because schools are “not equipping young people with the skills they need to navigate the technological revolution.
The UN scribe made this observation in a statement released to mark the UN International Youth Day (IYD).
The theme of IYD for 2019 is Transforming Education and it highlights efforts to make education more relevant, equitable and inclusive for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves.
At the heart of global concern for education of youth is the growing importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in shaping future employment opportunities.
The Bank of England warned in 2015 that up to 15million jobs in Britain are at risk of being lost to robots while a 2016 Report from Forester Research suggested that, by 2021, robots will have eliminated 6% of all jobs in the US. From all indications, ‘the future of the economy is in STEM.. That’s where the jobs of tomorrow will be…’
Nigeria is not immune from this global challenge having been ranked 152 out of 187 countries in the United Nations Development Programme Education Index for 2018.
In fulfillment of its mission, CVL(Centre for Values in Leadership) and Nigerian Youth Parliament(NYP) have pooled resources to commemorate the 2019 United Nations Youth Day.
In this regard, CVL and NYP are hosting a joint national conference that will provide youth in the country a platform to evaluate the role of youth in nation building and articulate initiatives that can improve their contributions to growth and development.
The conference is taking place on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Victoria Island, Lagos. Founder of CVL, Prof. Pat Utomi is the Chief Host while Dr. Tunji Adegbesan is the Keynote Speaker
