UEFA Proposes 14-point Plan To Reform FIFA

UEFA has unveiled a 14-point plan calling for major reforms at FIFA, including changes to the governing body’s leadership structure, oversight mechanisms and funding.

The proposals were agreed by UEFA and 54 of its 55 national associations at a meeting in Berlin, with Azerbaijan the only association not backing the plan as reported by BBC Sport on Thursday.

UEFA said institutional reform alone would not be enough and called for new leadership at FIFA, describing the need for a respected and unifying figure with strong football experience and a commitment to development, reform, integrity and independence.

The plan seeks to reduce the direct powers of the FIFA president and prevent presidential or executive interference in bodies responsible for ethics and disciplinary matters.

UEFA also called for safeguards to ensure FIFA resources are not used for personal or electoral interests.

“Another key proposal is increased financial support for FIFA’s 211 member associations, with UEFA calling for at least $10 million in additional funding for each association,” UEFA said.

The reforms come ahead of FIFA’s presidential election in March, when incumbent Gianni Infantino is expected to seek re-election. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin has ruled out standing against Infantino himself but said he is committed to finding a candidate who can unite the football community.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has indicated that he intends to challenge Infantino, although he must secure the required five letters of support to appear on the ballot.

UEFA’s proposals mark a significant push for changes to the governance of world football as the organisation seeks greater institutional independence and a different approach to FIFA’s leadership.
