Harvest Of Tragedies In Lagos As 5 Die In Boat Mishap, Factories, Swimming Pool
At least five people have lost their lives in the series of tragedies that occurred within a short period in Lagos State
It was gathered that two people are feared dead and 11 others rescued as a local boat capsized at Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana who revealed this to journalists on Sunday said the incident occurred when a wooden boat fitted with 30HP Yamaha Engine, operated by one Adesuyi John of Itun-Agan Community, Anuwo-Odofin with 13 passengers on board, allegedly collided with an NPA TUG Boat, with inscription ‘Lárana and No 9252723, at Itun Àga Area, Amuwo Odofin.
He said, “Consequently, the wooden boat capsized and the passengers got into the water. However, Teams of Marine Policemen, firefighters, LASEMA and other emergency management agencies swiftly mobilized to the scene, 11 of the passengers were rescued alive while two others are still missing,” he said.
Elkana said search and rescue operations were still ongoing for the missing two others since on Wednesday when the tragedy occurred.
In another development, a 50-year old man, Sunday Usenobong has died after allegedly falling inside a melting hot pot while operating the company’s machine.
It was gathered Usenobong was a staff of Landcraft industry Nig. Ltd, Odogunyan Industrial Estate, Ikorodu.
His death came two days after a 35-year old man, Olatunde Femi died after he got his head trapped while operating a moulding machine at Multipak Nig. Ltd., located at Plot F28, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun.
A statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Bala Elkana on Sunday said Usenobong allegedly fell inside a melting hot pot on Friday while operating the company’s machine.
“Consequently, the victim died on the spot. Homicide detectives have visited the scene. The corpse was evacuated to a public morgue for autopsy. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.
He added that last Tuesday too one Olatunde Femi, a moulding machine operator, at Multipak Nig. Ltd., located at Plot F28, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, allegedly got trapped while operating the machine.
“Consequently, the victim died on the spot. Homicide detectives visited the scene. The corpse was evacuated to a public morgue for autopsy. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.
In yet another development a 26-year old man has been reported drowned while swimming at the National Stadium’s swimming pool in Surulere area of Lagos.
Elkana also confirmed on Sunday that the incident occurred last week.
He said police received a distress call that one Sodiq Yusuf, 26, of 26, Horgan Bassey Street, Surulere allegedly got drowned while swimming in the National Stadium’s swimming pool, Surulere.
“A team of policemen was mobilized to the scene. The victim was rescued and rushed to Randle General Hospital, Surulere where he later died.
“The corpse was deposited at the Mainland General Hospital morgue, Yaba for autopsy. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.
