Standard Gauge: NRC Set To Remove Illegal Structures
Owners of illegal structures built or erected along the railway corridors have been advised to remove it as bulldozers will be deployed next week to demolish all illegal structures so as to create the Right Of Way for construction of Lagos to Ibadan Standard Gauge Railway line.
Managing Director of the Corporation Engr. Fidet Okhiria who dropped this hint in Lagos while speaking with journalists said lane marking for the project has been completed and that the removal of illegal structures will commence in earnest forthwith.
He was however quick to add that private individuals with genuine licenses for spaces occupied will be compensated accordingly while those that occupied spaces illegally will not be compensated.
According to him the Standard Gauge Railway line will be constructed alongside the existing Narrow Gauge Railway Line, just as the Lagos State government has been given approval to construct its Light Rail project along the same corridor.
Okhiria also stated that the contractors for the Lagos State Light Rail project and the consultant of the Lagos to Ibadan Standard Gauge Rail Line project will soon be meeting with a view to harmonize.
He stressed that the construction of the standard Gauge Railway Line will commence in two directions from Ebute Metta Junction to Apapa and Ebute-Metta Junction to Ijoko through Abeokuta to Ibadan.
He stressed that fund for construction of the Lagos to Ibadan Standard Gauge Rail Line has already been made available, adding that the project will be completed within 18 months.
On the employment of Nigerians, the Managing Director posited that the consultant will ensure that China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation respects the expatriate quota for employment of Nigerians
