Chelsea Agree Club-record £117m Deal For Rogers

Chelsea have reached an agreement worth £117m to land Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers.

According to the BBC on Saturday, the fee will stand as a club record for the west London side.

The deal also sets a new benchmark for the biggest fee ever paid for an English player.

The 23-year-old midfielder is billed to put pen to paper on a six-year contract, with the Blues holding an option to extend by a further season.

He is due in London for a medical on Monday once he wraps up international commitments with England at the ongoing 2026 World Cup.

The £117m fee eclipses the £116m Manchester City handed Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson, another England midfielder, only weeks earlier this summer, to become the costliest transfer involving an English player.

At Chelsea, it also surpasses the £107m the club spent to land Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez back in 2023, a deal that had stood as their previous club record.

Xabi Alonso, newly installed at the Chelsea helm, is said to be reshaping his squad ahead of the fresh Premier League campaign, with Rogers seen as a marquee addition to that project.

Rogers’ rise has been rapid. Originally developed in Manchester City’s academy, he only found his feet after dropping into the Championship with Middlesbrough before Villa snapped him up on February 1, 2024.

Under Unai Emery, the midfielder blossomed, netting 21 goals in 85 league outings and playing a part in Villa’s Europa League triumph last season.

He has since broken into the senior England set-up, earning 21 caps and one goal, and turned out in six matches at this summer’s World Cup.
