Armed robbers attacked a bullion van in Ebonyi State Wednesday killing four policemen who were escorting the vehicle.
Confirming the attack, Commissioner of Police (CP), Philip Maku, said the gunmen tried to intercept the bullion van at Ezzamgbo Junction, in Ohaukwu Council Area.

Maku noted that the van was conveying money from Enugu to Abakaliki, when the robbers, who tried to intercept the van and cart away the money in it, first fired at the police escorts.

He said four of the police officers were killed in the process, while two sustained serious injuries, noting that the robbers could not cart away the money.

“The robbers trailed the van from Enugu State, but failed to loot the van, as the driver managed to escape from the area.

“They damaged one of its tires, but the driver escaped towards the military checkpoint just ahead of the junction,” he said.

Maku disclosed that the two injured policemen have been taken to hospital for treatment, while the deceased have been deposited in a morgue, adding that the police had launched a manhunt for the robbers.
