Orthopedic Surgeon Blames Bad Roads On Road Accidents In Nigeria

A Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Prof. Olayinka Adegbehingbe has blamed most of the road accidents on roads across the country on bad condition of the roads.

The Surgeon while delivering the 331st Inaugural Lecture of the Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU), Ile-Ife titled: “That I May Live And Walk” noted that Nigeria was adjudged by World Health Organisation (WHO) as the country with the most unsafe  roads in Africa.

According to him, Nigeria is among countries with the highest rate of road accidents in the world, with 5,400 deaths in 12,077 road crashes in 2015.

According to him, the 2015 WHO report revealed that one in every four deaths from road crashes in Africa occurred in Nigeria, thus a higher death toll than malaria.

He posited that if Nigeria government will promote safe road by construction of good roads and engage in   prompt rehabilitation of bad ones, road accident will be reduced drastically.

The Orthopaedic Surgeon warned Nigerian masses against patronising traditional bone setters as alternative to qualify orthopedic practitioners when accident occurs.

He lamented the rate accident victims ignorantly patronize traditional bone setters with the mentality that they are cheaper than going to hospital for medical treatment.

According to him, the bamboo tree and local charms used for treatment will eventually rupture the wound which later has adverse effect on the affected parts and later result to amputation.

He called on government to ban traditional bone setters because of the havoc they cause their patients.

Prof. Adegbehingbe assured the masses that any child born with clubfoot is no more a problem no matter the age,

According to him, his  observation was that there are some impossibility that do occur in human endeavours, among which are: bad trauma, injuries or road  traffic accidents.

“There are people that are born with deformity, which people believed cannot be treated, but with the help of God and researches carried out, all impossibility have become possible through discovery of operation”.
