Policeman Kills Bus Driver In Ekiti Over Extortion
Tragedy struck Wednesday in Oye Ekiti, headquarters of Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State as a policeman shot a commercial bus driver, identified as Olabode Segun Ojo dead at a check point in the community.
The driver, said to be travelling from Ikare in Ondo State on Tuesday evening, had refused to part with the money allegedly demanded by the police at the checkpoint, an action they claimed had infuriated one of
the policemen, who shot at the vehicle speeding away.
According to an eyewitness: “When the driver was hit by the bullet, he lost control of the bus and it somersaulted, leaving the passengers injured.
“He was lying dead at the scene while in the confusion, every other person was crawling out of the crashed vehicle, seeking help.”
The witness also added that the victim hailed from Ikare in Ondo State, claiming that, “the Olukare was said to have spoken with the FRSC, Ekiti State command to ascertain his identity.”
An officer of the state sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Mohammed Olowo, said a witnesses account on the incident had it that only the driver of the bus, allegedly shot by a policeman, died in the incident.
Also confirming the incident, the Ekiti State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alberto Adeyemi, said that the suspect, whose name he gave as Corporal Ayodele Famodimu, had been arrested and was already facing departmental orderly room trial.
Adeyemi said “his name is Corporal Ayodele Famodimu and his departmental orderly room trial has already started.
“When the trial is been concluded, he will be dismissed after which he would be charged to court”.
