NUP Advocates National Minimum Pension Law

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) is lobbying Senators for a National Minimum Pension law, with legal backing through an Act of Parliament.

The appeal was made during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, to demand for support on issues necessary for the improvement of their living conditions.

This is just as they also asked the National Assembly to wade into their myriads of challenges.

Led by its National President, Dr. Abel O. Afolayan and General Secretary, Elder Actor Zal, they said their request may sound incredible, but it is a fact that many of their members are currently earning pensions of N5, 000 monthly and even less.

“This ugly situation will be removed, if there is a minimum pension enacted by the National Assembly as an Act of parliament in the same manner as National Minimum Wage Act was approved and given the backing of the law by the National Assembly,” he said.

He said there are currently two main types of pensions in the country; the Defined Benefit Pension Scheme and the Contributory Pension Scheme.

Responding, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau promised that the committee would look into their submissions.
