Oyo NUT Alerts On Looming Crisis Over Plans To Elongate Chairman’s Tenure
Primary and post primary school teachers in Oyo State have alerted security agencies over looming crisis if alleged plans to elongate the tenure of the current chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state, Comrade Oluniyi Alamo, succeeds.
The teachers, under the aegis of ‘The Concerned Teachers of Oyo State’ alleged that the state wing executive council meeting held at Ogbomosho recently, the date of retirement of the state chairman was illegally extended contrary to Article 4 section (iii)C of the NUT constitution.
The petition which was titled, ‘Looming Crisis in NUT Oyo State wing, Appeal For Intervention’, was also copied to the relevant state organs and stakeholders in the state, including the Secretary to the Oyo State Government, The Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, The Commissioner for Establishment and Training, The Chairman, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), The Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), The President, Oyo state ANCOPSS and the Chairman, Oyo State AOPSHON.
According to the petition which was signed by the duo of Comrade Fawumi M. B and Comrade Alabi Soji, the embattled state chairman, whose tenure began in November, 2014, was expected to terminate on September 30th, 2017, which coincidentally, was the same day the chairman is due for retirement from teaching service.
The aggrieved teachers who are also kicking against the perceived carefree attitude of the national leaders on the matter, retaining or elongating Comrade Akano’s tenure as the chairman of the teachers union, said it is against the rule of engagement in the state public service.
They warned that the flagrant flouting of the NUT constitution may degenerate into a serious and uncontrollable crisis as teachers have resolved to reject the illegal extension of the retired teacher, who is now a pensioner, to continue to act in the capacity of the NUT Oyo state chairman which is an obvious aberration of NUT constitutional provisions.
They appealed to the security agencies to intervene by stopping the retired NUT chairman from parading himself as teacher’s representative in all functions henceforth, as well as to dispossess him of the Union’s properties at his disposal.
The teachers also pleaded with the police to stop him from having access to the office of the state NUT chairman in the Teachers’ House.
