Osun Govt Faults Police Assault, Commends Swift Response By IGP, CP
Osun State Government has viewed and condemned a viral video capturing two uniformed men physically assaulting a female citizen at the Odo Ori Market, in Iwo, Osun State.
A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs Funke Egbemode stated that the two Police Officers, identified as Inspector Ikuesan Taiwo with AP NO 251724 and PC Abass Ibrahim with Force No. 509634, went overboard in the discharge of their duties.
Egbemode noted that “this is a democracy, and the State of Osun is a decent society where men in or out of uniform should not and cannot whimsically flog women – even men.
“The State Government hereby appreciates the Inspector General of Police, IGP M. A. Adamu, and the Commissioner of Police in the State of Osun, CP Johnson Kokumo, for the prompt response in redressing the assault as shown in the viral video.
Egbemode, however, encouraged security men to enforce the lockdown to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 conscientiously and within the ambience of the law without assaulting their rights to personal liberty.
Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ), Osun state chapter has called for the parade of the policemen before journalists.
A statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo by Mrs Motunrayo Ayegbayo and Florence Babasola, Chairperson and Secretary respectively condemned the act and noted that women are handled with dignity worldwide.
