Former Stoke City favourite, Peter Odemwingie, says it’s frustrating that to many he’s best known for the transfer deadline day saga of January 2013.
Odemwingie, then of West Brom, was pictured outside of the QPR training ground on deadline day three years ago ahead of what he thought was a proposed move.
However, it soon became clear that the deal wasn’t going through, with Odemwingie forced to make the journey back to the Midlands with his tail between his legs.
But the Nigerian, who enjoyed two-and-a-half seasons with Stoke between 2014 and 2016, says all was not as it seemed on that day.
Odemwingie later had to apologise to the West Brom fans for the incident before eventually sealing a move away from the club in the summer of 2013.
And he revealed his frustrations at that being what he has become known for during an appearance on Sky Sports.
“People always talk about that but in reality I have over 100 career goals, I’ve played in a World Cup, an Olympic final, and done so many things, but people always bring this up,” he said.
“It’s negative, and I had to fight my way back because some people thought that was the end for me in English football.
“Thankfully my quality, and people’s understanding, still gave me a chance.
“I was misled… because when we got to London West Brom changed everything in our opinion.
“They said that a player was going but they should have told me that it wasn’t sorted.”
The following January Odemwingie joined Stoke in a swap deal with Kenwyne Jones who made the move to South Wales.
Odemwingie would score five goals between January and the end of the 2013/14 as Stoke achieved their best ever Premier League finish.
