Only Good Governance Can End Terrorism, Insecurity In Nigeria- Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the weekend called on Nigerians to ensure that there is good governance in the country, saying it is only an effective leadership that can end the menace of terrorism, insecurity, amongst other vices bedeviling the country.
Obasanjo, who spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital at a security summit organised by ASIS International, said he has taken a cursory look at the current security situation in Nigeria and discovered that no one could boast of being adequately secured.
He also maintained that all the indices which could make a country boast of being secured are currently lacking in the nation’s security arrangement.
The programme was meant to sensitise members of the Private Security Council of Nigeria (PRISCON) with the realities and challenges in the security practice.
Obasanjo, who spoke at the event tagged: “Building Capacity for Professional Growth”, listed those indices to include: good and effective leadership, good governance, adequate development as well as strong cultural value system within the context of our culture.”
The former president, who emphasised that these indices are the driving factors of insecurity however, maintained that Nigeria would overcome her problems of insecurity if policy makers in the country could focus well on those indices.
He explained that a good leader must live by his words, runs an administration where politics is not synonymous with lies as well as administering a governance that is not accused of marginalising any ethnic tribe.
While deploring the current insecurity in the country, the former president also advocated for strong value system within the context of our culture and tradition so as to be able to address the security challenges.
Speaking with journalists, chairman of the Lagos chapter of ASIS International, Oluwaseyi Adetayo called for the review of the laws regulating security practice in Nigeria in a way to include proprietors of private security companies,
Emphasising that security practice in Nigeria presently lacks adequate control, regulation and right statutes, Adetayo also called for the establishment of a body that would champion the cause of ending fragmentation of private security practice in Nigeria.
