Ondo Govt Halts Monarch’s Anniversary Over Security Concerns
Citing unfavourable security concerns, the Ondo State government for the second time in seven months suspended indefinitely the one year anniversary celebration of the Alale of Akungba Akoko, Oba Sunday Ajimoh.
The action was sequel to the lingering Chieftaincy tussle over the stool.
The monarch rescheduled the celebration for Friday (February 23rd) only for government to wield the big stick again.
The state government via a letter addressed to the traditional ruler directed that the event be put on hold in view of an unfavourable security report.
It was gathered that the Director, Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Adeyemo signed the letter on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry ”of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The letter reads in part: “There is a threat to peace and security as a result of the proposed programme. The state government has therefore directed that the proposed anniversary celebration be suspended indefinitely.”
Adeyemo said government would not allow anything truncate the prevailing peace in the state, “including Akungba Akoko which hosts one of the state universities.”
According to him relevant security agencies have also been briefed of the latest development.
Recall that the immediate past governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko installed Oba Ajimoh in the twilight of his administration.
The other ruling house, known as the Ole-Ruling House, had challenged the installation of Ajimoh in court.
Subsequently, an Appeal Court sitting in Akure, has upheld the decision of Ikare-Akoko High Court that recognized lsiaka Oseni as a Prince who is entitled to the throne of Alale of Akungba.
