Ogun Assembly Seeks Review Of VIO Laws
The Ogun State House of Assembly has tasked the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) arm of the State Ministry of Works to propose a bill for the amendment of its existing laws so as to meet the present reality in the transportation sector.
The State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure led by Hon. Olayiwola Ojodu, who gave the charge during an on the spot assessment visit to the VIO offices at Kotopo and Quarry, also advised the agency to be more proactive at ensuring that only roadworthy vehicles are allowed to ply roads in the State.
The lawmaker charged them to ensure strict compliance with road traffic laws and help reduce road crashes.
In their remarks, Honourables Idowu Olowofuja, Israel Jolaoso and Julianah Akintayo, decried the high rate of road accidents by motorcycle riders in the State, counseling them to uphold best practices as well as device civilized means of enforcing road traffic regulations, with more efforts on organization of more sensitisation to maintain sanity on the roads.
Receiving the House Committee, the Director, State Fire Service , Engineer Adefala Fatai assured that the State Fire Service would soon introduce Rapid Intervention Vehicle Scheme (RIV) in strategic areas of the State to allow for quick and effective response to fire disaster.
Adefala explained that the RIV would convey a minimum of 200 to 300 litres of water to adequately respond to fire disaster in any part of the State, while the nearest zonal offices would be deployed for reinforcement operation.
Earlier, lawmakers including Olayiwola Ojodu, Israel Jolaosho, Victor Fasanya, Julianah Akintayo and Idowu Olowofuja challenged the agency to be more proactive by adopting more modern strategies in its rescue operations especially fire fighting for qualitative service delivery.
The lawmakers who stressed that disaster was inevitable in human society, sought the need for the establishment of more fire stations across the State especially in areas that were considered high risk due to increased population and high concentration of industrial and commercial activities.
Meanwhile, members of the judicial arm of government have been commended for upholding accountability,transparency as well as strict adherence to professional ethics in the discharge of their duties.
The House of Assembly committee on justice ,ethics and public petition who gave the commendation, while visiting the state judiciary to appraise its 2017 budget performance said the arm of government could only grow when members promote mutual interdependence among all the arms of government towards enhancing democratic ideals.
The committee chairman,Assemblyman Adebowale Ojuri who led other members to the State judiciary at the State High Court, Isabo said as an arm of government, the judiciary must continue to live above board and build an efficient workplace that would always be responsible for the interest of people.
In his presentation, the Chief Registrar of the State Judiciary, Mr Sola Oloyede said the agency realised the sum of N106m from the proposed N150m representing over 71% achievement.
