Ogun 2019 ADC Reps Candidate Escapes Assassination As Gunmen Invade Campaign Office
A candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC) Omoyela Olabode that contested for National Assembly seat during the February 23, 2019 general election in Ogun state on Monday escaped assassination by the whiskers when unidentified gunmen attacked him in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.
Olabode, who contested the House of Representatives seat of Abeokuta North/Obafemi-Owode/Odeda Federal Constituency on the platform of African Democratic Congress (ADC) sustained bullet wounds when he was attacked after returning from a political meeting.
Our correspondent learned that the gunmen, numbering about 20, invaded Olabode’s campaign office located at the Agbeloba axis of Abeokuta metropolis, beating up all his aides they met on ground before heading towards his apartment where they shot at targets.
An eyewitness, who spoke with journalists on condition of anonymity, explained that the masked gunmen gained access to the politician’s campaign premises at about 12:15 am on the fateful day after scaling through the perimeter fence and left through the main gate after the operation which lasted about 15 minutes.
The politician, who recently decamped from ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the presidential election, however, sustained bullet wounds on the arms in the incident.
He was however, later rushed to an unknown hospital where he is still receiving treatment.
Speaking with journalists Monday in Abeokuta, the state capital in a telephone interview from the hospital where he is recuperating, Olabode said the matter had been reported at the Adigbe Divisional Police station.
The politician, who ruled out the possibility of the attack being politically motivated however, called on the Police to ensure that the perpetrators of the dastardly act are brought to book.
When contacted, the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi denied knowledge of such incident in Ogun state.
The PPRO said that police only had a report logged at its Adigbe Divisional headquarters by Olabode’s driver who claimed that he was abducted by some gunmen who demanded that he should lead them to the hotel where his principal was lodging.
“When the policemen, led by the DPO in charge of Adigbe division got to the hotel, he demanded for the CCTV footage. And when it was played, we discovered that such incident never occurred”.
