NIMASA Assures Shipowners Of Protection Against Pirate Attacks
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has assured indigenous Shipowners of protection against pirate attacks in the country territorial waters.
This was disclosed by the head Maritime Safety of the agency, Capt. Sunday Umoren shortly before the Shipowners Association of Nigeria (SOAN) held its election in Lagos yesterday. He said the management of the Agency is doing everything possible to secure the nation’s territorial water from attacks.
Umoren stated further that the Agency had always been at the forefront of contacting the Nigerian Navy anytime there are report of pirate attacks on Nigeria waters. Umoren who disclosed that the Agency doesn’t bear arm said it had a cordial relationship with the Nigerian Navy in combating piracy.
He said, “We have always spread the report to the Navy whenever there is an alert from Shipowners.” Speaking earlier, the Shipowners have complained about NIMASA slow response whenever their vessels are under attack of Pirates.
The Vice President of the association, Mkgeorge Onyung had complained about slow response especially as pirate attacked his vessel in 2011 and 2015. He however asked NIMASA to be proactive in responding to pirate attacks.
